Beirut has never needed an excuse to hide a bar. The city has been doing it for decades, through periods when discretion was practical rather than fashionable, and the habit outlived the reasons for it. What is left is a genre: a door you walk past twice, a room that holds thirty people, and a bartender who remembers what you drank last time.

The current crop is the best it has been. These rooms are smaller than the rooftops and louder than they look, and most of them care more about the sound system than the cocktail list, which, if you have spent an evening in one, is the correct order of priorities. Several sit within a few streets of each other in Gemmayze and Achrafieh, so an evening can reasonably take in three of them.

None of these are secret any more. They are just quiet, which is better.

Lucylu

Gemmayze

Follow the rabbit. Lucylu brought the speakeasy idea to Gemmayze and still does it properly: an unmarked way in, a small room, and a night that builds rather than starting loud. The bar takes its cocktails seriously without lecturing anyone about them, and the crowd tends to stay until the room decides it is finished.

Scarlet

Downtown

Reserved for those on the list, and the door means it. Scarlet is a Downtown basement that fills late and keeps its own hours, with a sound system built for the room rather than the street. It is not hard to find once you know, which is the whole point of the genre: quiet from outside, busy within.

Drop Sociale

Gemmayze

Curated beats and Japanese eats, in a Gemmayze room that works equally well as dinner and as the start of a night. The kitchen sends out small Japanese plates while the booth keeps the tempo, and the two are planned together rather than stacked on top of each other. Go early to eat properly, or late and eat anyway.

Clique Beirut

Downtown

A Downtown room that earns its name on a Friday, when the takeover turns a restaurant into something else entirely. Clique is the polished end of Beirut's late list: a door policy, a proper sound rig, and a crowd that dresses for it. Book the table if you intend to be sitting down at midnight.

Futomama

Gemmayze

Baos, bowls and beats out of a Gemmayze deli counter, which undersells it considerably. The Asian menu is short and confident, the room is small, and the music is chosen rather than streamed. It works as a fast, excellent dinner and as the reason to stay for one more, the sort of place that fills by word of mouth.

Limbo

Achrafieh

Beirut's only high fidelity cocktail bar, and the specification is the point. Limbo is built around its sound system: valve amplification, records rather than playlists, and a room shaped so you can hear all of it. The cocktails are made with the same seriousness, and the Achrafieh address is deliberately easy to walk straight past.
