From Dinner to Dance Floor: Where to Dine and Dance in Beirut

In Beirut, dinner is rarely the whole evening. At each of the five places below the night starts at a table and ends with the music turned up, without anyone having to move on. Each does it in its own way: DJs after eleven, curtains that close on the dining room, a candlelit lobby bar, a piano at the centre of the room.

Four are in the city, in Achrafieh and Gemmayze, and the fifth is a short drive north on the Naccache seafront. Book ahead, go at the weekend, and do not plan an early start the next day.

Mimi Beirut

Achrafieh

Sisters Yasmina and Elissa Yared opened Mimi in a landmark Achrafieh building, in a room by BUS Architects of rich wood and marble, red accents and a 22-metre lighting sculpture overhead. Dinner is Mediterranean and carefully plated, served at low tables and along a 15-seat bar while the music stays mellow. After eleven the mood changes: DJs and pop-up entertainment take over, and the invitation is to stay.

Rouge Bonbon

Achrafieh

Love and chaos is how Rouge Bonbon sums itself up. It is a bold bar lounge in Achrafieh and one of the city’s newer openings, dressed in deep red: velvet curtains, mirrors and wall lights, and low lamps on the tables. It is the drinks-first one of the five, with creative cocktails and a crowd that comes for late nights and weekend gatherings. Bring a group and book a table.

Lost Lobby Bar

Gemmayze

The lobby bar of LOST, a boutique hotel on Gouraud Street opposite the St Nicolas stairs, which calls itself an eclectic supper club. The room is high-ceilinged and softly candlelit, the cocktails are taken seriously, and the food is light and Mediterranean: dips, grilled cheeses and mezze plates to share between rounds. It opens Wednesday to Sunday, and it is at its best late.

ELSE Beirut

Naccache

ELSE describes itself as dine and dance, and it is built for both. It sits on the 11th floor of the G1 tower on the Naccache seafront, from the group behind SPINE, in a closed, cosy room of arched ceiling, polished copper and red velvet curtains. Dinner, contemporary with Japanese and fusion turns, unfolds in two acts, and when the curtains close the room turns from dinner to dancing. Fridays and Saturdays, from nine until three.

Patronne

Gemmayze

Dinner comes first at Patronne, on Pasteur Street, and its founder, the restaurateur Samer Maroun, is clear that it is not a nightclub. The cooking is contemporary French, served in a renovated room of 110 seats with a piano at its centre, and the name honours the woman who runs the house. Eat well and slowly, then stay for the moment the evening gathers around the piano.
